1. Who we are
Motorhome & Caravan Sat Nav ("we", "us" or "our") operates the Motorhome & Caravan Sat Nav mobile application, its backend service and this website. We are the controller of personal information collected directly through those services.
Privacy enquiries can be sent to [email protected]. Support enquiries can be sent to [email protected].
2. Information we use
| Category | Examples | How it is obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Account information | Name, email address, account identifier, a securely hashed password for email sign-in and short-lived email-verification records. If you choose Apple or Google sign-in, we also receive a verified provider identifier, your shared name and email (which may be an Apple private relay address), and temporary sign-in records. We retain an encrypted Apple authorization token so we can disconnect Apple when you delete your account. We do not store your readable password or verification code. | Provided when you create, verify or use an account. |
| Marketing preferences and consent records | Your email marketing choice, consent source (where the choice was made), the wording and wording version presented to you, and timestamps for consent and subsequent preference changes or withdrawal. | Recorded when you make or change your choice in the app, or unsubscribe from a marketing email. |
| Vehicle profile | Vehicle type, height, width, length, gross weight, axle weight, towing status and route avoidance choices. | Entered and saved by you. |
| Location and route requests | Precise current coordinates, search text, selected origin and destination, route geometry, journey progress and routing preferences. | From your device with location permission, and from destinations you choose. |
| Navigation voice prompts | Short direction text, which can include road names, and generated MP3 audio. Our backend sends the text to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech's EU endpoint to create Google WaveNet prompts. | The forthcoming version 1.6.6 update keeps cloud voice off until you explicitly enable Google WaveNet on your iPhone before driving. You can turn it off again in Navigation settings. |
| Saved places and journeys | Home label and address, coordinates, route names, origin, destination, distance, travel time and creation date. | Saved when you choose a home location or create route history. |
| Subscription information | Apple product identifier, transaction identifier, subscription status and expiry date. We do not receive full payment card details. | Provided by Apple through StoreKit after a purchase or restoration. |
| Technical and security information | IP address, request date and time, response status, device or browser information and diagnostic server logs. | Generated when the app or website communicates with our servers. |
| Support correspondence | Your email address, message, screenshots and details you choose to send. | Provided when you contact us. |
Face ID is handled by iOS. The app receives only a success or failure result and does not receive, store or transmit your biometric template.
3. Why we use information and our legal bases
- Provide the service and perform our contract: create, verify and secure your account, send essential authentication emails, synchronise your vehicle profile, search for places, calculate routes, provide guidance, save your chosen home and route history, and confirm subscription access.
- Use location with your permission: show your position, select a nearby search area, plan routes, update journey progress and reroute. You can change location access in iOS Settings.
- Your choice for optional cloud voice: In the forthcoming version 1.6.6 update, Google WaveNet is the only speech source on iOS and CarPlay and remains off until you explicitly enable it on your iPhone. Turning it off again stops new prompt text being sent to Google and stops spoken guidance. Visual guidance remains available; withdrawing this choice does not immediately delete existing cached audio.
- Our legitimate interests: operate, protect and troubleshoot the service, prevent fraud and misuse, answer support requests and maintain service reliability. We balance these interests against your privacy rights.
- Your consent for offers and product news: record and manage your optional email marketing choice and send occasional subscription offers and product news only when you actively opt in.
- Legal obligations: respond to lawful requests, maintain records required by law and protect legal rights.
We do not sell personal information, use it for third-party behavioural advertising, or use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
Email communications and your choices
When you create an account, we use the email address associated with it to contact you about your account and the service. This includes verification and security messages, replies to support requests, and important changes affecting your account or use of the service. We send these messages where needed to provide our service, meet legal obligations or pursue the legitimate interests described above.
Offers and product news: If you actively choose to receive marketing emails, we record your choice, when and where it was made, and the wording presented to you, including its version. We use this information with your consent to send occasional subscription offers and product news. This choice is optional and does not affect your access to the app. You can withdraw consent in the app’s Settings or by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. We use Twilio SendGrid to deliver these messages, with open and click tracking disabled.
Consent is collected inside the app through a separate, optional checkbox that is unticked by default. Creating an account or accepting this privacy policy does not give consent to marketing emails. This website explains your choices and how to manage them; it does not collect marketing consent.
You can withdraw consent at any time, or contact [email protected] for help. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before you withdrew consent. Unsubscribing stops offers and product news but does not prevent essential account, security or support messages.
4. Location, maps and routing
Live GPS updates are used on your device to display navigation, speed, journey progress and missed-turn detection. When you search or request a route, relevant coordinates, search terms, destination details and vehicle restrictions are sent securely to our backend and then to our routing provider.
HERE Technologies processes search, geocoding, routing, traffic and road restriction requests. When UK speed-camera alerts are enabled, our backend sends a simplified corridor of route coordinates to a configured OpenStreetMap Overpass service to retrieve mapped fixed-camera positions near the route. Apple provides MapKit map content, iOS location services, Face ID and StoreKit purchasing. These providers process information under their own privacy terms.
Optional Google WaveNet voice: In the forthcoming version 1.6.6 update, if you explicitly enable it on your iPhone before driving, our authenticated backend sends short direction text to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech's EU endpoint and receives an MP3 prompt. The synthesis payload does not include your app-account identifier or a continuous live-location feed. Google also receives technical request information. Google WaveNet is the only speech source on iOS and CarPlay. While voice is enabled, valid cached Google prompts can play offline; uncached or unavailable audio leaves visual guidance without synthesized iPhone speech.
6. How long we keep information
- Account, vehicle profile, home, route history and backend subscription entitlement records are kept while your account is active and are deleted when your account is deleted, unless a limited record must be retained by law or for an unresolved dispute.
- Apple and Google account identifiers are deleted with your account. We revoke retained Apple authorization tokens before account deletion. Temporary social sign-in records expire within 15 minutes and are removed by a cleanup job that runs every five minutes.
- Unfinished registration details and verification-code hashes are removed after they expire and are normally purged within 24 hours.
- Hash-named Google WaveNet MP3 prompts expire from our private server audio cache within 7 days and from protected app audio cache storage within 30 days. Either copy may be removed sooner; the app cache is also cleared when you sign out or delete your account. Expired server files are removed by regular cleanup. Turning WaveNet off stops new prompt text being sent and stops spoken guidance; existing cache copies follow these retention periods.
- Operational and security logs are normally kept for no more than 90 days, unless needed for investigation, security or legal reasons.
- Support correspondence is normally kept for up to 24 months after the issue is closed.
- Deleted information may remain in restricted backup copies until those backups are overwritten, normally within 90 days. It is not restored to active use.
- Apple independently retains purchase and payment records under Apple's policies and legal obligations.
We periodically review what we hold and remove information that is no longer needed.
7. Your privacy rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you the right to:
- ask for access to your personal information;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- ask for deletion of information;
- restrict or object to certain processing;
- receive information you provided in a portable format;
- withdraw consent where processing relies on consent; and
- complain to a data protection regulator.
Use our Privacy Choices page or email [email protected]. We may need to verify that you control the relevant account. We normally respond within one month.
8. International transfers
Some providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where the destination does not have a UK adequacy decision, we require an appropriate transfer safeguard, such as approved contractual clauses and the UK Addendum or International Data Transfer Agreement, together with proportionate technical and organisational safeguards.
9. Security
We use HTTPS in transit, access controls, authenticated API requests, password hashing, keyed verification-code hashing, code expiry and attempt limits, database permissions and service monitoring. No internet service can guarantee absolute security. Please use a unique password, protect your device and contact us if you suspect unauthorised access.
10. Children
The service is designed for drivers and is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly create accounts for or collect personal information from children. Contact us if you believe a child has provided information.
11. This website
The website does not load the optional Facebook timeline until you choose “Show Facebook posts”. Loading the timeline connects your browser to Meta, which may receive your IP address and browser information and use cookies according to your Facebook settings. You can remove the embedded feed using “Hide Facebook feed”; this does not delete cookies already set by Facebook. See Meta’s privacy policy for details. We do not otherwise use advertising, analytics or non-essential cookies on this website. Our hosting and network providers may process standard server logs, including IP address, user agent, requested page and timestamp, for delivery and security. Email links open your chosen email service; information you send is then handled as support correspondence.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when features, providers or legal requirements change. The latest version and effective date will remain available at this URL. We will provide additional notice in the app where a change materially affects your rights or how information is used.
13. Contact and complaints
Email privacy enquiries to [email protected].
You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Visit ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or telephone 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concern first.
