1. Vehicle dimensions and route
- Confirm travel height including roof fittings, width including mirrors, and overall length including racks or the coupled caravan.
- Check laden vehicle, trailer and axle weights against applicable limits. Keep measured weights separate from plated maximums.
- Select the correct navigation profile; check units and field definitions before entering dimensions and weights.
- Read the campsite’s arrival directions. Confirm the entrance and any access restrictions; save directions and its telephone number.
- Review road restrictions, closures and the final approach before departure.
2. Prepare for travel
- Check tyre condition and cold pressures for your load, road lights, mirrors and visibility.
- Secure loose items, cupboard and fridge doors, windows, rooflights and external lockers.
- Stow the awning and lower aerials as applicable. Set gas and appliances for travel following their instructions.
- Disconnect and stow cables and hoses; raise steadies and stow levelling equipment.
- Secure external loads. Ensure everyone has an appropriate travelling seat and restraint.
3. If towing a caravan
- Complete the hitch manufacturer’s coupling checks and correctly attach the breakaway cable.
- Connect and test trailer electrics; raise and secure the jockey wheel; disengage the mover and check towing mirrors.
- Check loading and noseweight against outfit limits. Remove security devices; release the caravan handbrake only when safely coupled and ready.
4. Final walk-round
- Check around, above and beneath the outfit; confirm doors and lockers are secured and the pitch is clear.
- Set navigation while parked, secure the device and arrange power. Follow road signs and actual conditions; stop safely if the route looks unsuitable.
A practical reminder, not a complete vehicle inspection. Follow vehicle and equipment manuals. Navigation cannot guarantee clearance or road suitability.
